Only The Good Die Young

It was 1990, Kampong Pandan, Kuala Lumpur. I was working in a Musical Studio called “Power House”. It was the year that I knew Zul Fikhri. A young school boy who would drop by very often as his home was not far from the studio.

He would drop by on most evenings to hang-out and pick up guitar lessons and tips from anybody that would care to share. The studio was always full of people coming and going. Honestly, at that time he was just another face in the crowd. Little that I know that it was also to become a face of someone that became very very dear to me.

He went on to pursue electronic engineering. After he was done with that, next he took up sound engineering and became a successful sound engineer. To top that, he also lectures on sound engineering at Malaysia’s very own National Academy Of Arts, Culture & Heritage (Aswara). At 37 he is doing well.

I’m sure many that knows him will agree that he has all the qualities that one would expect from a “True Friend”. Ever ready to give a helping hand even in the dead of the night. And due to his extremely good nature, people tend to take advantage and exploit him. Although he never once complained about his hardship and the exploitations that he got, I knew about it from other people and was a constant thing that I nagged to him about. He finally got over people taking advantage of him. At least to my knowledge that is.

Well today I lost this friend. A brother as far as I’m concerned. It was just last Thursday that we spoke. I knew that he wasn’t feeling well lately and he was seeking help. I infact accompanied him to his therapy session a fortnight ago. His condition was improving.

But since Friday he wasn’t asnwering my calls nor my text to him. But I didn’t put much thought to it as I knew he had another session of therapy on Saturday. And I figured he must be tired and resting. I had made plans with some friends to go and see him yesterday. Little that I know that he was already admitted into the ICU unit. By the time I got that information, he was already in a coma. I managed to see him last night but there was nothing much that I could do either.

He passed on peacefully at 8:50am this morning. We laid him to rest by noon. It has been an honor to have known you Bro. You have graced and touched my life in immeasurable ways for the past 21 years. You are painfully missed! Rest in peace my dearest Adinda Fik. This song is my mourning for you. Yeah you know this one too and you know that I’m not sayin goodbye. So see ya on the other side you mandarin speaking malay you!, insyAllah. Al-Fatihah. Salutes!
