When the first POD Line 6 came out many years ago, it was the buzz in the guitarist community. An “amplifier modeling” unit which digitally simulates guitar amplifiers and cabinet models. It was very impressive than but I somehow felt that it had room to improve on. And back than it wasn’t even available in Malaysia.
Today Line 6 products have improved many folds and last year I got myself the Spider IV 30 Watt. For a home user like me it serves me more than enough. It’s fun, it’s LOUD and no more messy patch cables to run through all the stomp-boxes that I usually use.
But after messing on it for about 3 months, I started to miss the “tube sound” and some sounds that I got from certain stomp-boxes. And almost all of the Line 6 amps won’t play nicely with stompboxes or other multi-effects for that matter. It’s just a stomp-box killer!
I still have my old trusty Marshall Valvestate 8080 with me that I can run through all of my stomp-boxes and multi-effects smoothly. But than the Marshall “tube” had to be replace too as it’s almost 20 years old and is starting to loose clarity and volume output. Come to think of it, that was one of the reasons that I bought the Spider IV. So it’s back to the Spider IV while I order a tube replacement for the Marshall.
While looking for the Marshall’s Tube replacement online, I was wondering if there would be other “modelling and simulation” amps that would accept stomp boxes and multi-effects without literally killing it! That was when I discovered the Yamaha THR and it was like a dream come true accept it was only available in the U.K. But nevertheless I have always liked Yamaha’s Musical Products (even my bike is a Yamaha lol!). In my humble opinion they have always built quality musical products. And it has been ages since Yamaha came out with a guitar amplifier. And by the looks on their promo video, it’s the perfect desktop amp. I was sold!

p/s.. The THR-10 plays nicely with stomp boxes!
